Second grade is exploring rhythms: building a repertoire of known rhythms with our Conversational Solfege study, and using games like Temple Block Conversations to display their understanding. Students have learned to differentiate duple and triple meter.. They are becoming proficient at naming andunderstanding rhythmic values of notes, and the basic notation involved. They will also explore melodic form, playing familiar tunes on the xylophones. The students take pride in these accomplishments. The tone color of various instruments will be explored in When I First Came to This Land, and Early in the Morning. Mallet skills and drumming are featured in the old favorite Miss Mary Mack. Movement games provide 0pportunities for socialization as well as musical experience. Favorites include Zodio, Alabama Gals, Going to Kentucky, Alabama Mississippi, and others. As the year progresses the students will get chances to create their own rhythmic compositions.
