Fourth grade will be studying several areas simultaneously throughout the fall. In Mr. Bean’s room, they
will study sea shanties in conjunction with their social studies work on historic New Bedford, which will
culminate in a performance. The accompaniments for the shanties will include challenging two-part drum
parts and a three-part accompaniment on barred percussion. They will begin studying the instruments of the
orchestra later in the year, including a hands-on opportunities with the violin, flute, trumpet, trombone and
various percussion instruments. In Ms. Maillet’s room they will be introduced to the piano lab and are
working on basic theory and piano skills.
